Aura Films – Essex Short Film Internships

Deadline for applications 23rd January

Aura Films is offering 16 paid internship-style placements (national minimum wage), as part of an exciting new film production project supported by Essex County Council’s Creative Industries Project Development Fund. Interns will gain hands-on experience working on two professionally produced short films inspired by Essex legends and folklore, all shot on location across the county.

This is a practical, industry-facing opportunity designed to give young people real insight into professional film production while developing skills, confidence, and creative networks.

Who can apply?

  • Age: 16 years or older
  • Location: Must live in Essex
  • Experience: No previous professional experience required
  • Interest: A strong interest in film, TV, or creative media

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive working environment.

How many places are available?

16 internship placements in total, 8 interns per film, across the following areas:

  • Directing
  • Cinematography
  • Sound Recording
  • Post-Production

Each intern will be placed in a specific department and mentored by experienced industry professionals throughout the process.

When will the internships take place?

The internships will run between January 2026 and March 2026, aligned with the project’s production schedule.

Exact dates will vary depending on department and film allocation, but all interns will receive a clear schedule in advance.

What to expect from the internship?

This is a hands-on, professional learning experience. Interns will:

  • Work on real film sets alongside professional cast and crew
  • Gain practical experience in their chosen department
  • Learn how a short film is made from development to delivery
  • Be mentored by experienced freelancers

Interns will be actively involved in production activities appropriate to their role, age, and experience, with safeguarding procedures in place at all times.

Why apply?

  • Gain real on-set experience on professionally produced films
  • Build practical skills that are essential for film and TV careers
  • Develop local industry connections without needing to leave Essex
  • Strengthen future applications for education, training, or entry-level roles in the creative industries

This opportunity is designed to help address the lack of accessible industry pathways within Essex and to support young people in taking their first steps into screen careers locally.

About the project

Interns will work on one of two short films inspired by Essex folklore and history, filmed across Essex.

Each film is a proof-of-concept project aimed at developing future feature films or series, meaning interns are contributing to work with long-term creative and professional value.
